MiniTri at Upper Dublin, powered by KidzTri3

Upper Dublin Parks & Recreation has partnered with KidzTri3 to bring youth triathlon to kidz ages 3 to 12, on and around the campus of Upper Dublin High School. The MiniTri will take place on the same day as the Upper Dublin Parks & Recreation Sprint Triathlon and will immediately follow the adult race.

What is a MiniTri?
A MiniTri is a fun way to introduce kidz ages 3 to 12 to triathlon. MiniTri race courses are completely closed to vehicular traffic, so your kidz are not traversing residential neighborhoods or places where cars could potentially be on the same road as your triathlete.

If your kidz can SWIM, ride a BIKE, and RUN (or walk), bring them out to give it a TRI!

How it Works
MiniTri’s do not have set course distances by age group, rather when registering your child, you select the desired course distance by course color (see options below). We’ve shortened the swim, bike and run courses, and have added a Wingman Division for our younger racers. Are your kidz riding balance bikes, 3-wheels, 4-wheels and use swim aids?  No problem…they can race too!

Our focus is on participation rather than competition and MiniTri’s are not timed..

Participant Race Age
Boys and girls who are between the ages of 3 to 12 on race day, can participate in this event.

Race Course Options
Each course is ability focused, so there’s something for everyone. During the registration process, you will be asked which course your kidz want to do; however, if they want to change their course selection on race day, no problem— just let us know race morning.

PURPLE (Wingman Group Ages 3 to 6)25 Yards.08 Mile.11 Mile
BLUE25 Yards.22 Mile.25 Mile
GREEN50 Yards.45 Mile.25 Mile
ORANGE100 Yards1.14 Mile.5 Mile

Participant Requirements

  • Buddy/Wingman Course Requirements – This Division is for kids ages 3 to 6 who need a little support on the race course. Racers are REQUIRED to be accompanied by a “wingman” ages 16 or older, in the pool or on the pool deck during the swim, and walk/run alongside them on the bike and run courses. Crossing the finish line together is optional – some kidz just might want to do that on their own! Sorry mom and dad…it does happen! Swim aids (Coast Guard Approved swim vests, puddle jumpers, etc.), bigwheels, balance bikes and 3- or 4-wheel bikes (no scooters) are all permitted. NOTE: Kidz must be fully potty trained to participate—no pull ups or water-specific pants allowed.
  • Blue, Green & Orange Course Requirements – Kidz must be able to swim on their own, unassisted. Wingman support, swim aids and any bike that is not 2 wheels, is not permitted.

How Does My Racer Know Where to Go on the Race Course?
All our race courses are color coded by age group so triathletes can easily see where they should be at all times by following the course markings of their race color. When your child pickups up their race packet, they will receive a race wristband and run bib number in the color of their age group. This also allows our Race Crew and Volunteers to ensure your racer completes the correct course distance.

FREE Transition Clinic for Registered Participants!
Registered participants will be able to attend a free transition clinic before race day. They’re great for first time racers or kidz who want to learn some new tricks and sharper those transition skills! This is an opportunity for your kidz to work with our KT3 Racing Crew and learn how to transition from swim to bike and bike to run and become speedy fast (aka “efficient”) on race day. We cover setting up your transition area, mounting/dismounting your bicycle safely, and other fun stuff. We do not swim, but racers need to bring everything with them that they will use on race day (we’ll send out some tips on what to bring prior to race day). Practice dates and a sign-up link will be sent to all registered participants when they register for the event.

Bike & Helmet Inspection
Safety is our first priority and to participate in this event, your child’s bike and helmet must pass a safety inspection prior to entering transition race morning.  Our KidzTri3 Race Crew will check bikes to ensure brakes work and helmets fit properly.  We encourage all families to have their racer’s equipment checked by a bike shop prior to race day, as our Crew does not fix bike problems on race day.  Helmets should not have any cracks and must fit your child’s head correctly, as outlined by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration. Once your child’s equipment passes the safety inspection, a special waterproof Race Sticker will be placed on BOTH the bike and helmet, which ensures access to Transition on race morning. NO Sticker, NO Race, NO Exceptions.

Athlete Guide
Three weeks before race weekend, we will post the Event’s Athlete Guide. An email will be sent to all registered participants when the Guide is live and everything you and your racer needs to know about race weekend is in the Guide. Many questions we receive leading up to race weekend are found in the Guide so be sure to review it with your racer.

To ensure the safety of our athletes, we need Volunteers to help on race day. To sign up, click HERE. If you know any high school or college students that need volunteer hours, we’d love to have them and the kidz really like seeing them on the race course!  This is a great way for them to have lots of fun, make a difference in the lives of these triathletes, and get their hours.
